Patchouli
Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin
Parts Used: dried, cured leaves
Scent Characteristics: earthy, smoky, spicy and musky
History: Long used for perfume, often to mask unpleasant aromas, Patchouli has been a common staple oil in the East. In fact, many people would refuse to buy clothing that was not scented with Patchouli. It was used to repel fleas and lice in bedding and clothing. In Asia it was often used to heal snakebites, as well as dealing with intestinal upsets and headaches. It was used to scent ink in India. In the Philippines and in South America, women would drink a Patchouli leaf tea to get rid of menstrual cramps. It is an excellent base note in perfumes and is used in 1 in 3 perfumes on the market today.
